Iranian Commentary

Qom Theological School backed the firm stances of the Iraqi Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani against the terrorist group of Daesh (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria).

In a statement on Monday, the prestigious religious school said what the Takfiri group, as the agent of the world hegemonic powers in Iraq, ruthlessly committed against the defenseless nation and its legitimate government has nothing to do with the teachings of any religion especially Islam.

It asserted that the terrorist group committed crimes against the Iraqi nation amidst the absolute silence of international bodies claiming support for human rights.

It further underlined support for Ayatollah Sistanis fatwa on the necessity of public resistance against the Takfiri criminals.

The statement noted that the terrorist group was backed by western hegemonic powers as well as certain Arab states.

Dismissing any foreign interventions in Iraq to tackle the situation, it said the Iraqi nation is quite capable of confronting the terrorist group.

Sadiq Public SchoolBahawalpurPunjab is a boarding college-preparatory school in Pakistan, though Day pupils study there as well. It is spread over 451 acres (1.83 km2). In respect to area covered it is the largest in the country and in continental Asia. It has passed its fifty eighth anniversaries.
On January 18, 2004, the school completed 50 years. It is a residential institution, imparting education to boys and girls from KG to 'O' and 'A' levels (Cambridge University) and local board Matriculation/Intermediate. The school has over 1250 boys and 350 girls supported by a staff of about 110.
The foundation stone of the school was laid by His Highness Ala Hazrat Al Haj Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V on 4 March 1953 and the school started functioning on 18 January 1954.

History
When Pakistan came into being, there were only two public schools in the country namely the Aitchison College, Lahore and the Lawrence College, Ghora Ghali, Murree. The people of Baluchistan, Sind and Southern Punjab sent their children considerable distances to attend those schools.
The Ameer of Bahawalpur Ala Hazrat and Chief Minister of Bahawalpur State saw the need for an institution which would provide the same quality of educational opportunities to the people of the Southern Punjab.
In order to accomplish this project, the Ameer of Bahawalpur State, Ala Hazrat Nawab Sir Sadeq Mohammad Khan V allocated a sum of rupees nineteen lacs for the construction of the buildings. In addition, 2,050 acres (8.3 km2) of land was given by the Ala Hazrat at a token price. The site was transformed into a spacious campus of lawns and playing fields, in the midst of which rose nine buildings ready for use. The school started functioning on January 18, 1954 when the Ala Hazrat performed its opening ceremony.
Makhdoomzada Syed Hassan Mahmood, the then Chief Minister of Bahawalpur State was the main force behind the completion of this project which was completed in less than a year. The first batches of 'O' Level, Matriculation and Intermediate classes appeared in 1957, 1958, 1966 respectively. This school is rated 5 star hostel and school by Cambridge University. Sadiq Public School is one of the only two schools of Pakistan which are the members of The Headmasters' and Headmistresses Conference (HMC)

Sadiq Produces wonderful debaters

LAHORE: The Government College University Debating Society (GCUDS) has set a new national record by clinching 265 oratory awards at various prestigious national and international competitions during the university’s 150th academic year, says annual report of the society.
GCUDS President Khawaja Yasin presented the Annual Report 2013-14 to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleequr Rahman at the society’s annual meeting on Tuesday.
The report highlights that the record 265 awards include 56 coveted team trophies, 18 runners-up trophies, 92 best speaker awards, 52 second-position awards, 44 third-position and three consolation prizes, which were won at 92 declamation, parliamentary, recitation and poetry competitions in English, Urdu and Punjabi languages at national and international levels.
Vice Chancellor Dr Rahman said that achievements of shining orators were particularly laudable since they were not exempted from any academic work or exams as was the norm elsewhere. “Yet, they have beaten all the previous records of the GCU and other national institutions by achieving the highest number of awards i.e. 265,” he added.
He termed the Debating Society as a “crown” of the GCU’s student clubs on account of its unprecedented accomplishments, adding that competitive debating had been his forte since student days, as it played a vital role in shaping intellectual landscape of students.
The vice chancellor recalled that that he had rightly enhanced the annual grant of GCUDS at the beginning of previous academic year, which bore fruit.
The vice chancellor especially congratulated Ahmad Chaudhry, Zahid Ali, Khakan Arshad, Hassan Haider Raza, Misbah Mukhtar, Adnan Nawaz, Muhammad Awais, Shahzad Khan, Hafiz Rehmatullah, Hassan Virk, Sana Mansoor, Ismail Sharwani and Khawaja Yasin for their commendable contribution to take the tally this high.
GCUDS President Yasin said that in the 150th academic year of the GCU, the Ravian debaters had humbly paid homage to their alma mater by winning 265 awards. He attributed the momentous victory to the unflinching support and patronage of their vice chancellor, who not only arranged state-of-the-art trainings for them but also funded their trips to represent the GCU at international and national debating events.
Khawaja Yasin said that the vice chancellor had shown a special interest in debates at the GCU and they hoped that he would continue to supervise the same.
The Ravian debaters stamped their seal of competence at prestigious educational institutions all over the country including PAF Academy, Risalpur; Kinnaird College, Lahore, FCC University, Lahore, Aitchison College, Lahore, Army Burn Hall School, Abbottabad, NUST, GIKI, PIEAS, Sadiq Public School, Bhawalpur, UET, Lahore, UAF, COMSATS, KEMU, AIMC, Edwards College Peshawar, GCUF and Chief Minister’s Youth Festival.
Later, the vice chancellor posed for a group photograph with shinning orators of the GCUDS and hoped they would maintain their excellent position in oratory and remain the pride of their alma mater.

Post Grads Love the School

I want to bring to the notice of the honorable Governor Punjab Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, the pathetic and deplorable condition prevailing in what was one of the finest education institutions of Pakistan. It was a turning point for Bahawalpur region when, due to the generous donation of 450 acres of prime land and the untiring and praiseworthy efforts of then Chief Minister of Bahawalpur Makhdoomzada Hassan Mahmood, a school was completed in our area. It was completed in a record period of nine months and started functioning on 18th January 1954.
The School soon became one of the finest public schools of Pakistan owing to the hard work of the founding fathers, the great and dedicated people such as Principal Khan Anwar Sikandar Khan, Mr. Abu Zafar Haneef, the Senior House Master and Mr Jivanandham, the Bursar. After Mr Abu Zafar Haneef’s retirement the school suffered a series of setbacks when a retired Colonel was appointed as the Principal in 1979. This period was the start of the decline of this great seat of learning. All the Principals that followed, including the present incumbent, have not been able to run the school in line with its glorious traditions and the unmatched standard of education expected of it. Some of the teaching staff that was hard working and loyal was abruptly removed and new favourites were appointed. Naturally when someone achieves a position due to a favour, there can be no motivation to work hard and thus any organization will start declining.
Being an old Sadiqian on a visit to Pakistan, I request Governor Punjab to take immediate steps to save Sadiq Public School from further deterioration.

How Good is it? Very Good

SADIQ Public School, Bahawalpur, is one of the premier educational institutions in the country. It was built on more than 450 acres by the late Nawab of Bahawalpur, Sir Suleman Sadiq Gill Muhammad Khan Abbasi V, and started functioning on Jan 18, 1954. The school was built under Makhdoom Zada Hassan Mahmood, who was then the chief minister of the state of Bahawalpur and father of the present governor of Punjab, Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood.
Sadiq Public School was made by the Nawab on the lines of Eton and Harrow and Richmond Virginia, both of which were and are still premier public schools in England, having produced about 27 prime ministers. Eton was established in 1440 and Harrow followed in 1572 and both still exist and function to this day on the same original philosophy based on which they were established.
Sadiq Public School has suffered since the Zia era when incompetent and financially compromising principals were installed in this unfortunate school, trampling merit.
The school’s original philosophy and traditions have been diluted and in some cases abolished altogether over a period of time by these successive principals who had no inkling as to what the original intent of this school was. As if this was not enough, the previous governor of Punjab agreed to disfigure this magnificent institution beyond recognition. He agreed to convert it into a university just because a foreign country was prepared to provide funding for this purpose.
This decision smacked of ill will. It provided sheer delight for the few who saw some tempting kickbacks coming their way. This funding should be welcomed but not for a new university in another backward area as there already exists Islamia University in Bahawalpur.Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood, the present governor of Punjab, saved the school from deterioration.
On Feb 9, at a meeting of its board of governors, he scraped this ill-conceived idea of destroying Sadiq Public School beyond recognition. He also directed the executive committee of the governing body to immediately implement the remedial steps to bring back its past glory by restoring the original intent, traditions and excellent academic standards synonymous with Sadiq Public School.
Old Sadiqians like me are thankful to the governor of Punjab for this timely intervention and help in saving one more institution from being put out of its aims and objectives.
